Why Concussion Management Matters
Concussions are an increasingly common concern across sports, workplaces, and daily life. Although most concussion symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, nausea and headaches, resolve within days, the brain can remain vulnerable for weeks, making proper care essential.
Without knowing your baseline brain function before a head injury, return-to-play or work decisions risk being guesswork. This puts you at risk of prolonged symptoms or severe complications.
At Physio Club, our Complete Concussion Management Inc. (CCMI) registered physiotherapists deliver evidence-based concussion care to support safe recovery and reduce the risk of long-term effects.

Baseline Testing
Baseline testing is a pre-injury evaluation of your cognitive and physical function. It establishes your personal “normal” before a concussion happens, giving clinicians a reliable reference point to:
Assess concussion severity
Track recovery progress
Guide safe return-to-play and return-to-work decisions
Baseline tests evaluate memory, attention, reaction time, balance, coordination, vision, vestibular function, and more. They utilise standard tools like the Sport Concussion Assessment Toll 5th Edition (SCAT5) and neurocognitive testing platforms.
Early Concussion Care & Treatment
When to see a physiotherapist:
How physiotherapy helps:
Neurological assessments to confirm diagnosis
Gradual, symptom-guided exercise and mobility programs
Hands-on manual therapy for neck, head, and upper body
Oculomotor and vestibular rehabilitation for balance and vision issues
Collaboration with doctors, psychologists, and specialists as needed

Understanding Post-Concussion Symptoms (PCS)
PCS affects some people for weeks or months after injury, causing ongoing physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms. The five key systems impacted include:
- Autonomic Dysregulation: Affects heart rate and exercise tolerance – managed with graded aerobic exercise and breathing techniques.
- Hormonal & Neuroinflammatory Imbalance: Causes fatigue, sleep issues, mood changes – managed with nutrition, sleep hygiene, and medical support.
- Vestibular & Ocular Dysfunction: Leads to dizziness, vertigo, and visual sensitivity – treated with vestibular rehab and eye exercises.
- Cervical Spine Dysfunction: Neck pain and cervicogenic dizziness – managed through manual therapy and posture correction.
- Psychological Factors: Anxiety, depression, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – addressed through counselling and stress management.
Community Sport & Concussion: Australian Guidelines
Key Points From the Guidelines:
Recognise concussion early from signs like confusion, headache, nausea, dizziness, and behaviour changes.
Remove suspected concussed athletes from play immediately and monitor for red flags requiring emergency care.
Prioritise (relative) rest for 24-48 hours, followed by symptom-limited activity and medical assessment within 3 days.
Avoid alcohol, drugs, driving, and being alone initially.
Athletes should be symptom-free for at least 14 days before contact training, and 21 days before returning to competitive contact sports.
